Feet
footsteps’
blowing the shadows away from the ant hills
the raindrops
barking through the holes
uncovering the dirt
washing his hands
opening his face
he walked westward

Two rusty nails
peeled back the opening irons roof
lying quietly in the corner
ears folded
dusty paws
one tongue
wet with saliva
drops to dust
he looked eastward

Her skirt fell to the chicken wires gate
the wind catching the cleft of her shirt
her neck hot
sweaty
then damp
her torso smothered
gripping
and flat
she gazed northward

One man
a dusty hat
the young red dog
his sun drenched kennel
the beautiful girl
her youthful face
that dust filled day

Pass me my bat
ball and chain
pass me a hat
I’ll take on the rain
raincoats for warmth
just aren’t my style
throw me a kiss
to keep for a while

I walk north, east then west
waving at neighbours
as they carry on in life
feeding those dogs
chicken and geese
or dishing out milk
to the shed’s new cat
who to this fine afternoon
has yet to kill a rat

Two branches shaded the outside lamp
dampness scuttled down Military Road
slowing only to round the bend
that fell into Bondi

Cars
chasing night sounds below
tourists
their buses had all gone home

Crashing against the foreshore
the waves collided with northbound traffic
distant steps stood
to Bondi’s northern gate

He heard an echo
of rubber to tar
the rattle of chain
a fallen sigh
the drip of rain
Bondi

where do you sleep now

Rain fell softly
on your iron roof tonight
window panes obscured
raindrops out of sight
what for all the water
where did it but land
making one large river
perhaps even some sand

But where do you sleep now
all cosy in your bed
or on a distant ship deck
you never really said
can I catch you falling
as your dreams take you away

Or can I think of you
and the time you let me stay

The rain etched along glass panes
stretching above roses to form in small circles outside
blown effortlessly up then across
by infrequent gusts of wind

I could hear our son walking in a straight line to the fridge
then back again
high above the floor below
in our bed

You said you wanted me to hold you
to take care of you
I wanted to touch your hair
your face
that space
between today and tomorrow
between the window and our bed
catching three words you said
I need you

Times two

Merlot

The rain flickered in spurts from the windscreen
their windscreen wipers only just keeping up with the downpour
as he rounded the final corner
finally away from the freeway
from Friday
traffic lights
traffic
and phone calls

Nosing the bonnet in front of the garage he waited
Kim raced out to raise the door and let them in
her skirt lifting and reaching for the stockings garter belt below
where it rested
until the door was fully open
Kim then flew inside to find the bathroom
as he followed with the wine
their Thai takeaway
and his briefcase

That feels better
Kim said
as she returned to the kitchen to join him in a wine
serve the Thai
and sit
Michael found his way toward the living room
to fire up the gas heater
before returning to sit
and eat with his attorney wife
they then sat aside each other on the couch
wandering through their week
chasing the lost opportunities
occasionally catching glimpses of one another
as the heater danced inside the screen
heating up the glass
then moving further afield
to touch them

tumblr_mo78imq8bu1s6gab3o1_500
Michael looked intently now
upon his wife’s long blondish hair
her long forthright neck
toward her green Pringle cardigan
inside to gaze briefly at her flesh
sitting upright within her bra
he lowered his vision slowly
capturing site of her long inner legs
as they rode with her stockings
high up her length into her thong

Kim turned her gaze toward him
she smiled
Lets fuck
he said
in a relaxed off hands
kind of a way
she looked away
angling her vision back toward the heat
No Michael
she replied
But why?
He absconded
we never do IT anymore
No Michael
she said curtly now
Not tonight
she said
before returning to the kitchen
to pack the Thai plates into the dishwasher
and head back into the bathroom for a shower
tumblr_mm6y6vccBo1rlb3hco1_1280
Not any fucking night
Michael whispered to himself
before lifting his index finger higher
to drown himself in the last remnants of his Merlot
He could then feel his pocket vibrating
he looked down toward the screen
now staring at him from inside his hand
It was Kathryn
from the office
What’s up
he said
Sorry to bother you Mike
Just a call to let you know they signed

Kathryn replied
That’s awesome news
Oh and by the way
you’re not bothering me
I was just about to bend Kim over the kitchen bench top
but I hadn’t quite started yet

he said
before hanging up

Kim returned
her pink dressing gown catching the wetness of her now damp hair
Would you like another wine
Michael inquired
Yes
she said
Thanks darling
Oh and by the way
Who was that on the phone
she asked
No one important
he replied
before unleashing the cork away from the wines head
Just some secretary in the office I’ve been fucking

the front paddock

tumblr_m7u8kxvTSP1r48046o1_500

Frightened trees
spooked the windswept bay horses
in the front paddock
in winter
outside home
iron bark fence posts
wired together tightly
with their water soaked heads
crying for light
or a break from the clouds
or both

Troughs
billowing in the wind
overflowing with rain
water
brushing to the sides
then out onto the grass
with it’s rye and clover
green tinged with grey
branches
lying over to one side
pushing forward then back
splitting
flying
cutting against the bark

Above the wells empty centre
the darkness of night
then the howl of a dog
searching for light
or an intruder to catch
as I struggled to remember
that cold night in September

Rain is falling
softly again
you are sleeping
It’s half past ten
last night after midnight
I heard you cry
for someone to hold you
to answer why

I wanted to hold you and make it okay
I wanted to wash all the tears away
but its all too complex
too disjointed now
if only I’d held you
I just didn’t know how

He pulled the collar up to shield against himself
the rain became heavier
his hand extended above his head
ripped torn and now in pieces
hopping into the car
a Keith Matheson shirt
how annoying
yet it had stood the test of time
the windscreen wipers clapped at full strength
he was ten minutes from seeing her again
the oncoming traffic heightened his tension
anxious at best he was soon to question more

tumblr_n2g1yigSsE1sbz8guo1_1280
Had she even missed him?
We’re they still a chance?
entering her driveway
capturing her stance

Neath a broad brimmed umbrella
beautiful at first glance
her smile touched him sweetly
as his heart began to dance

mustering in the high country

The cattle toward the head of the creek were spooked
the horsemen had spoken to soon
bereft of cattle dogs they pushed on
tracks led them past one rusty bogan gate
beyond the timber yards into a sea of tall trees,
bracken fern and blade grass
either way the mist had set in
visibility was at a premium
his horse met the wire then stopped
before bucking furiously in search of an escape
falling down he landed
only to follow a trail of blood back to his mount
his colleague and his quest
to find these rogue steer cattle
in amidst the mist

Rocks
shallow creeks
languishing vines and moss met their horses hooves
as they continued on
amongst broken bridles
blood and burnt logs
burying their heads against the incoming rain
looking for cattle tracks gutted with pain
he searched for their faces
as an opening did appear
yet only home approached
without even a bullock
nor a steer
